Dementia Friendly Pharmacy Wins Australia's Pharmacy of the Year for Professional Innovation

Amanda Bryce is a Perth pharmacist and community pharmacy owner of 20 years, who has championed a dementia friendly initiative at her pharmacy in Bicton, Perth resulting in being awarded as Australia's Pharmacy of the Year for Professional Innovation at APP2018.

Amanda has owned Gerald Burns Pharmacy in Bicton for ten years and transformed this into a Dementia Friendly Pharmacy in 2017 after staff completed the training offered to healthcare professionals by Dr Andrew Stafford.

We believe that community pharmacies are an untapped source of support for people living with dementia, but pharmacists don't know where to start. Dr Andrew Stafford has designed a course, "Dementia Essentials for Pharmacists" that ten of our team completed and the rest is history. All patients benefit from a dementia-friendly environment. It costs very little but provides immeasurable benefit

“Becoming dementia friendly has completely changed the way we work. It’s taught us to slow down, listen more carefully and practice patient-centred care, every day.”
