Meals on Wheels joins the growing ranks of dementia-friendly recognised businesses in the Tweed area

The development of the Tweed area as a dementia-friendly community is evident with a steady increase in the number of local businesses and organisations being added to the National Dementia Friendly Community Hub. The latest to join is the Tweed Community Support (Meals on Wheels) which was recognised last year. “As a meal delivery service that also provides social support outings to individuals and groups, Tweed Community Support clients are all over the age of 65. The service’s commitment to becoming Dementia Friendly is in response to the awareness that the risk of developing dementia increases as we age and for people living with dementia and their carers, a diagnosis can result in social isolation,” said Tweed Community Support Manager, Chris Watt. Chris Watt said we are delighted to have taken this step with the Tweed Dementia-Friendly Steering Committee and Dementia Action Group. “As a service to the local community we are reminded each day of the growing number of our clients who are experiencing dementia in one of the many forms, either personally or as a Carer. “Our social support outings encourage our clients to continue being an active member of society. Becoming a dementia friendly community recognised business is an important step in achieving widespread community awareness around dementia and we are honored to be a part of this growing community,” he said. Christine Vannucci, Dementia Australia NSW Division’s Diversity Inclusion Officer based in Tweed Heads, said they were pleased to see more businesses and services taking the steps towards becoming more dementia-friendly. “It all helps towards building a community where people with dementia feel understood, engaged, included and valued,” she said
