Northern Beaches Council
By becoming a dementia-friendly organisation, the Northern Beaches Council fulfills several strategic goals of an inclusive, healthy, safe and socially connected community.
This is achieved through the Community Strategic Plan (Goals 8, 9, 11 and 12). This Plan provides a clear roadmap for Council to prioritise actions, remove barriers and ensure all areas of Council are more Dementia-Friendly.
Northern Beaches Council is a Local Government area stretching from Palm Beach to Manly with a population of more than 266,000 (ABS 2016). Council employs more than 1,800 staff working over 20 locations across a broad range of services including planning and building control, community services and environmental services.
There are currently 6,313 people living with dementia on the Northern Beaches which is expected to increase by 151% by 2058 (Dementia Australia, 2019). Dementia is likely to have a greater impact on our area as the proportion of residents aged 65 years is greater than Sydney, NSW and the national average. The risk of dementia increases with age.
