Dementia writing program: Making our Museum dementia-friendly
When: 10am – 12:30pm, October 2nd, 16th and 30th (morning tea will be provided at each session)
Where: Meet in the South Australian Museum’s Main foyer
The South Australian Museum is hosting a dementia-friendly pilot program, as part of its broader accessible programs, and is looking for participants.
We know that people living with dementia value inclusion, opportunities to participate and the chance to connect with others. The Museum’s Dementia Writing Program is centred on the Museum’s collections and will allow participants to explore a range of interesting objects and specimens, in a friendly, supportive environment. The program uses a range of short, writing tasks to connect participants with the Museum’s collections.
Criteria for participation:
Participants are able to attend independently or can attend with a friend, family member or support worker.
Participants should meet the following criteria:
- Clinically diagnosed with dementia
- Able to participate in the writing tasks
- Cognisant of what is involved in the program and actively choosing to participate
Please note that each session will have a different theme, so that participants can come to one, two or all three sessions.
What will happen at the sessions?
We will start with a brief tour of the Museum with Community Programs staff, then move to the Armoury where we will handle collection items and engage in a writing activity with a facilitator. At the end of the session, we will have morning tea in the Armoury.
